Simply put, this bass more than holds it's own with any of the active, American- made 5- bangers we have in the Elkcave and if you need a professional- grade bass on a working bassist's budget, this is definitely the one to have. It's very active sounding and when ran through my little SWR rig and easily covers any of the songs I attempted to coax from it.You can also dial the highs back a bit to get a deep, vintage P- bass or J- bass tone. The construction is top- notch and the twin Bartolinis do more than their job in the tone department. Well luck of all lucks, it is one of those great instruments and after sitting down with it for a good few minutes, I'm completely satisfied that it is indeed a lot of Tobias bass for $1200.00. There is no doubt about the quality and tone that possessed those early basses so when I first spotted this red 5- string, I was hoping that it was part of the 400 or so bass run from the Terada factory in Japan. If you can find a used one for a decent price that will be cool.( My man malthumb put me on to the used bass market.and I must say.he knows what he is talkin about, definitely more ban g for your buck.We've had a couple of American, pre- Gibson Tobias basses over the years and they are exactly what the legends say they are: exceptional instruments. I will finally say.Tobias is Great, but definitely not better than MTD and Smith basses. I also sold my old peavey for $200 to off set the cost so I feel pretty good about the value that I got. Overall I am satisfied with my Tobias I only kicked out $650 for mine and it is a 6-string neckthfrough design. There are pros and cons to the new Tobias basses:

I've talked about this with Michael himself and the growl of the pre-gibson basses justĬan't be duplicated with the new electronics. The reason being Gibson with the help of Michael changed the pickups and electronics in these bassesĭuring the handover. Guys the bottom line is Gibson Tobias basses were doomed to fail from the begining.
I would be very certain that the bass you will recieve will knock spots off the Gibson made Custom Tobias bass. If you want a quality made instrument designed and produced by Mike Tobias get an MTD. I have yet to see a Gibson made Custom Tobias and I have no idea of the quality. It is from my understanding that Gibson have recently opened a custom shop for Tobias Classic models. For the price I think they are ok and compared to other well known names out there within the same price bracket they are actually good value for money. However, they are considerably cheaper due to being manufactured in the Far East. Even though the design is more or less the same these basses use lower quality woods, hardware and electronics.
